Writer Jason Aaron ended his Star Wars run by focusing on standalone stories. That was great in terms of allowing Aaron the opportunity to revisit his cast members one last time, but not so much when it came to establishing a clear, exciting direction for the series in the aftermath of the "Screaming Citadel" crossover. That's something new writer Kieron Gillen addresses right away. Gillen manages to set a darker, more dangerous tone for the series even as he begins tying the story of Luke, Han and Leia into the events of Rogue One.
Gillen kick off this new story arc with two fundamental conflicts. The series still being set in between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the Rebel Alliance is in desperate need of a new base and new allies. The Empire, meanwhile, needs the raw materials to construct their second Death Star. Those two plot points converge on Jedha, a world now in its death throes following the events of Rogue One.
