12 Monkeys: Season 2 Review

Just as it did in it's stellar first season, 12 Monkeys: Season 2 ended up in a place that made our knowledge and expectations at the beginning of the year seem downright quaint. There was a moment in "Year of the Monkey" where one of the Messengers mocked Dr. Jones for her limited understanding of time travel, which turned out to be a nice metaphor for those of us who were thinking about how to stop the virus. So yesterday. So not primary.

Season 1 taught us to understand the geography of time in this universe, allowing the timeline to then become a background concern this year as the mythology got more complicated, as did our characters. Dr. Jones was no longer certain of her knowledge or the plans she'd laid out for Cole, and neither were those around her. Ramse's confidence in himself was diminished by his divided loyalties to his son and his brother. Jen went from comic-relief wild card to perhaps the show's most compelling character (though of course she was still a laugh riot). Cassie wrestled with being both a healer and a killer. And Cole learned to be a leader, rising to the occasion when those around him faltered and fell.
