As if it weren't bad enough that the previous Invincible Iron Man story arc dragged on for so long, the series is only just now finding time to tie into the events of Civil War II. Better late than never, though. With Tony Stark serving as one of the two main players of that crossover, this series has an essential part to play in fleshing out his role and his response to tragedies like the death of War Machine. The series' pacing is improving, though its visual struggles continue.
Writer Brian Bendis is able to juggle quite a bit of material in this chapter. There's plenty of chaos within Stark Industries as Tony breaks his deep cover. Bendis also explores the first encounter between Tony and teen genius/soon-to-be Iron Man Riri Williams. All that, plus some welcome focus on a few supporting characters who haven't received nearly enough attention since the opening story arc. Bendis is able to cover this ground without simply resorting to a series of long-winded conversations by presenting it all as extended flashbacks juxtaposed against our hero reacting to having his headquarters demolished by the Inhumans. It serves as a reminder of the stakes of Civil War II and how much Tony stands to lose in the months ahead. So while largely devoid of action, Bendis is able to deliver a tightly paced and dramatic script nonetheless.
