In Jean-François Richet's new film, Blood Father, the main character, Link, is introduced speaking at an AA meeting. While in general that sort of monologue can be instantly compelling as it offers the baring of someone's soul, there is an added element here as Link is played by Mel Gibson, a man whose own personal troubles with alcohol have been documented elsewhere.
The movie is, naturally, not about Gibson himself at all. The opening is just a way to draw the viewer in, and a very effective one at that. The tale is about Link, who has been out of prison for a year, been sober for two years, and whose daughter has been missing for four. In short, Link hasn't had an easy life, but he's trying to make amends now, so when he gets a call from his daughter, he does his best to help her. Link's daughter, Lydia (Erin Moriarty), is on the run from a drug cartel after having shot her boyfriend, Jonah (Diego Luna), who leads the local branch of said cartel.
