Reading Batman #4 is a somewhat off-putting experience at first. With the way the plot abruptly jumps forward from the previous cliffhanger, this issue leaves the reader with the distinct impression that they accidentally skipped a chapter. Is there a Batman #3.5 out there we don't know about? But oddly, the series still benefits from that sudden leap. It takes what had been a fairly slow-moving conflict and immediately kicks it into overdrive.
Early on in Batman #4, King and Finch deliver a sequence that very clearly mirrors the iconic moment from All-Star Superman where Superman convinces a suicidal teenager not to jump off a building. This version isn't quite as hopeful. More than simply calling back to another tale, this moment highlights the fundamental difference between Gotham City and Metropolis. Gotham is not a hopeful place. It's a city that eats up and spits out those who aren't strong enough to survive it. And though Gotham and Gotham Girl may have Superman-worthy abilities, they lack the Man of Steel's iron-clad will and fundamental decency. What was a story about Batman taking the measure of two new superheroes becomes one about the Dark Knight trying to save two troubled heroes from being devoured by his city.
