All-Star Batman #1 Review

Scott Snyder has been writing one Batman book or another for the vast majority of his career at DC. But if there's been any one constant over the last six years, it's that Snyder's approach to Batman and Gotham City is always changing. The status quo is in upheaval once again with Snyder's latest Batman project. All-Star Batman is a very different book from Batman or Detective Comics, and that's exactly why it works.

The goal with All-Star is two-fold - to explore the relationships between Batman and many of his most iconic villains, and to allow Snyder to work with a murderer's row of creative talent. This first issue doesn't disappoint on either front. The first story arc focuses on that age-old rivalry between Batman and Two-Face. But this isn't just any old tale of Two-Face preaching about chance and chaos. Snyder and John Romita, Jr. re-imagine Two-Face as the worst nightmare for Gotham's residents. The idea being that the same network of informants and information that Harvey Dent built up as District Attorney is now being exploited for blackmail by Two-Face. If Batman is Sherlock Holmes, Two-Face is now Charles Augustus Milverton.
