Superwoman #1 Review

This year, DC seems determined to test just how many Supermen one universe can contain. In the wake of the death of New 52 Superman, we now have the pre-Flashpoint Superman, his son, Jon, Supergirl, a Superman-themed Lex Luthor, a powerless Clark Kent and the so-called "New Super-Man," Kong Kenan. Now, with the debut of Superwoman, Lois Lane has gained super-powers and joined the fray. The series gets off to a perfectly enjoyable start, but it might be a tough sell for readers who are already feeling Superman fatigue.

The main appeal with this series comes with the chance to see Phil Jimenez working in the DCU again. The fact that Jimenez is both writing and drawing helps elevate his work even further. There's plenty of epic action worthy of a Superman or Superwoman here, and Jimenez's costume designs do a great job of re-working familiar Superman motifs. But often it's the quieter moments that stand out most. Jimenez's detailed, elegant figures have a lot of energy to them. The simple emotions at work in the conversations between Lois and Lana really help the characterization shine.
