Artistry takes a multitude of forms and consequently can be found in rather unlikely places. In The Dwarvenaut, director Josh Bishop serves up a wonderful documentary about Stefan Pokorny, a Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master who has built a business creating models for his hobby.
Bishop's film opens with a series of incredible close-up shots of a miniature world as voiceover offers up some exceptionally enthusiastic descriptions of a D&D adventure. We soon learn that it is Pokorny telling the tale and that what we are looking at is the miniature gaming terrain manufactured by his company, Dwarven Forge. The company is about to launch its third, and most ambitious, Kickstarter project. The goal this time, rather than selling a miniature dungeon or cave, is to sell a miniature city, Valoria, which Pokorny has been telling tales about for most of his life.
