David Brent is back. The star of TV's The Office makes his big-screen debut in Life on the Road, a spoof documentary in which he endeavours to make his musical dreams a reality. Yet while there are laughs to be had watching Ricky Gervais reprise the role that made him famous, the film unfortunately features more misses than hits.
The original Office revolutionised TV comedy when it aired back in 2001, the show hilarious, but also taking the mockumentary format and turning it into something strangely moving and unexpectedly profound.
We spent 12 episodes and two Christmas specials getting to know the hopes and dreams of the people who worked at a paper merchants in Slough, including General Manager David Brent, a man whose need to please was matched only by his complete lack of class, tact and judgement.
