The Night Of: "The Season of the Witch" Review

The Night Of has become preoccupied with John Turturro’s heroic lawyer John Stone to the detriment of the rest of the show’s increasingly large cast. Even Naz himself is starting to feel like a supporting player in the saga that is Stone’s life. The good news is that “The Season of the Witch” shifted course a little. While Stone remains the only character whose private life is of interest to writers Richard Price and Steve Zaillian, this episode did shine a light on other characters who have been underused for far too long.

Case in point, this week offered the meatiest role for Bill Camp’s Detective Box since the first couple episodes. Here viewers reconnected with the weary Box as we learned that he’s preparing to retire from the force and has been tasked with piecing together the exact timeline of that fateful night. That led to a cleverly edited sequence where Box’s detective work was juxtaposed against footage from “The Beach.” That episode made it painfully clear that the evidence was piling up against Naz from the moment he left his house, and it’s interesting to see all the security footage and phone records come back into play now.
