Released in France back in July of 2015, The Little Prince will finally be available for U.S. audiences this coming week. Though, there’s something strange about sitting in a theater and seeing companies like Amazon and Netflix flash across the screen, credited as distributors, blurring the line between home viewing and traditional movie going. But Mark Osborne’s newest film manages to overcome this strange link and assure viewers that this is not going to be another stay at home viewing experience.
The film embeds the 1942 book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery within a modern story line of a young girl navigating the rigors of her world. We first meet the Little Girl (Mackenzie Foy) sitting in a hallway with her Mother (Rachel McAdams), waiting for their admissions audition for Werth Academy. When one kid exits the auditorium, crippled by fear, the Little Girl then heads inside to prove herself. From here, viewers move through the town’s gridlocked streets, gray covering every inch of the neighborhood until we reach the Little Girl and her Mother’s house, which happens to sit beside an old eccentric home hidden behind an overgrowth of nature. The Little Girl’s curiosity gets the best of her and soon her studies are put aside as she spends her summer vacation listening to The Aviator (Jeff Bridges) tell his story of the Little Prince (Riley Osborne).
