The Night Of: "The Art of War" Review

Things started looking up for Nasir Khan in the latest chapter of The Night Of. Of course, when "things looking up" involves making friends with a fellow murderer and facing the possibility of a mere 12-15 years in prison instead of life, it's pretty clear how dark his life has become over the course of these four episodes. That same crushing tension and sense of dread that has propelled the show along remains, even if the pacing is becoming a bit too slow for its own good.

This week centered around the slow build-up to Naz's trial and Naz's attempts to settle into his horrifying new life on Rikers Island. Other than a fun little cameo from Aida Turturro (who got the chance to scream at her cousin for a couple minutes), the one significant addition to the cast this week was Ashley Thomas (24: Legacy) as Naz's new bunkmate, Calvin Hart. I'm not entirely sure what the point was in cycling out Kirk Jones' character and replacing him with another, very similar "jailhouse mentor" figure, but Thomas certainly didn't disappoint. He painted a portrait of a man quietly seething with rage, one who had his chance at revenge and squandered, and one who regards Naz with an equal mixture of pity, camaraderie and disgust. Just when when it seemed Naz had found a key new ally inside Rikers, Calvin turned violent on him.
