This is a spoiler-free review for the first six episodes of Netflix's The Get Down which premieres Friday, August 12th. The second half of the season, comprised of an additional six episodes, will debut on Netflix at a later date.
From the lavish mind of filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rogue, The Great Gatsby) comes Netflix's new original series, The Get Down - an energetic, joyously noisy period piece centered around the incredibly turbulent state of the late '70s South Bronx and the birth of the DJ/MC turntabling dynamic that would evolve into hip-hop. Of course, being that it's from Luhrmann, there's a sweeping storybook quality to the tale, but all of that aesthetic helps create a masterfully fun and engaging ride of redemption.
