Graphic Novel Review: Insexts Vol. 1

Sex and horror are often inextricably linked in pop culture. After all, sometimes there's nothing scarier than your own, changing body. That's pretty much the thinking behind Marguerite Bennett and Ariela Kristantina's Insexts. This series pairs Cronenberg-worthy body horror with a Victorian setting and a healthy dose of erotica for good measure. It's a bizarre combination that, thanks to a talented creative team, makes for a very compelling read.

The Victorian setting is key to the story Bennett and Kristantina are telling here, as beneath all the sex and gore, Insexts is a story about two women seeking power and agency in a society that would deny them both. As the series opens, Lady Lalita Bertram is languishing in an empty, loveless marriage, with only her faithful lady's maid/clandestine lover Mariah to provide comfort. However, Mariah offers more than comfort when she helps Lalita transform into a bloodthirsty insectoid creature and take revenge on her unfaithful husband. And that's just the first issue.
