Supergirl #1 Review

It’s not easy being the new kid on the block. It’s even harder when you’re the new kid on the planet. It’s that disconnect that Steve Orlando and Brian Ching look to explore with their take on the Girl of Steel, pairing superheroics with the challenges (and doldrums) of everyday life. And if this first issue is any indication, it’s a story we can’t wait to read more of.

While Supergirl’s Rebirth issue was an overstuffed affair, it did succeed in reestablishing Kara both in terms of her returned power set and that of her current social standing. With that out of the way, Orlando is free and clear to dive right into her ongoing narrative, something he does with an excellent character-rich approach. Considering that she’s now a television star, most are already familiar with Kara’s story. However, even those who aren’t will have a clear understanding of who the character is within the first few pages. Orlando’s script is sharp in its setup, capturing both Kara’s youthful exuberance and isolated loneliness in a way that rings remarkably true and relatable. She’s not a dejected trope, nor is she an over-bubbly caricature – she’s a real teen, just one who happens to share a bloodline and aesthetic sensibility with Earth’s mightiest hero.
