Fans of FX's Louie already have a built-in appreciation for the subtle, non-direct style of that's show's minimalist approach to dark comedy and undignified drama. They also know just how valuable Pamela Adlon is as a performer, having recurred on, and written for, that series for years. Well, FX's new comedy, Better Things, co-created by Louis C.K. and Adlon, is here to continue this legacy of poignantly and painfully accurate slice-of-life TV.
Adlon's Sam Fox has a different temperament than her Louie character, but there are still crisp and devilish traits present that Adlon is so great at portraying. Having Sam be a single mother of three girls, and an actress, helps create a synergy with Louie, but there are still very distinct elements to Better Things. Adlon, as the lead here, shows us an amazing spectrum of vulnerabilities that come with being a parent, an artist, and a human being trying to squeeze in love and affection whenever/wherever possible.
