The new volume of Batman got off to a solid start, but the first arc frequently suffered from the fact that new heroine Gotham Girl was so poorly developed compared to her brother. This standalone issue seeks to rectify that problem by finally putting Gotham Girl in the spotlight. It serves as a much-needed turnaround for a character who's clearly meant to play a crucial role in the series going forward. And it doesn't hurt that this issue allows one of DC's greatest artists the chance to ply in Gotham City.
Writer Tom King uses this story to check in with Gotham Girl in the aftermath of her brother's tragic death. Given that said death happened at her own hands, it goes without saying that Claire isn't coping very well. Much of this issue follows Gotham Girl as she averts one disaster after another, all the while chatting with the imaginary ghost of her brother. This material offers a great deal of vital insight into who Claire is, what makes her tick and what role she'll play in the series now that she's flying solo. Occasionally her dialogue can be a little grating. King tends to overuse "like" and "I mean" an awful lot, though you could argue that's dead-on for today's youth.
