Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! Review

Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You! aims to retell the funny yet touching story of how Ash and Pikachu first met and became best buddies, and in that regard, it is successful. The movie emphasizes the importance of friendship above all else with an energetic and colorful presentation full of obscenely cute Pokemon. Everything plays out as you’d expect, until the end where things take a sharp turn into some cringe-worthy material, ultimately leaving things on a sour, awkward note.

This movie is essentially Ash’s Greatest Hits from Season 1 of the Pokemon animated series, only stuck in fast-forward. We see lots of pivotal moments like when Ash first earned Pikachu’s trust, Ash caring for an abandoned Pokemon, and Ash fully evolving a Pokemon only to send it on its way. If you’ve seen the show, then you know exactly which episodes I’m talking about. The issue with the movie is that it rushes through these storylines in a matter of minutes, so they don’t have quite the same emotional impact.
