This issue really goes places. Gerry Duggan and Scott Koblish aren't merely trading on nostalgia when it comes to depicting the classic Cable/Deadpool dynamic in this arc. Instead, they're testing the bonds of that partnership and exploring whether it can survive Wade's recent backslide into villainy. In the process, the duo are delivering some of the wackiest and most entertaining moments in Duggan's long run.
Admittedly, this issue gets off to a slightly rough start. It quickly becomes apparent that Deadpool and Cable's recent feud has more or less blown over, despite where issue #288 left the characters. That's a bit of a tension-deflator. Luckily, it's not long before the story regains its momentum. Duggan and Koblish reunite the old Dynamic Duo just in time to pit them against Stryfe in a wonderfully over-the-top confrontation. Stryfe has never ranked among my favorite X-Men villains. It helps a great deal that Duggan takes such a tongue-in-cheek approach to the character, using Deadpool to poke fun at the many weird excesses of Cable and his evil clone.
