Plenty of Spider-Man fans are questioning Sony's decision to move forward with a Spider-Man-less Venom movie. But this series proves that such a thing is not only possible, it can do justice to the character. Why do you need Spider-Man when Venom is perfectly happy to take on the character's rogues gallery himself? Therein lies the appeal with this current story arc.
On paper, Kraven the Hunter seems badly outmatched against his symbiotic prey. But if writer Mike Costa does anything right in this story, it's highlighting Kraven's cunning, bloodthirsty nature and his ability to out-think and out-plan his more powerful prey. In short, he works just as well as a nemesis to Eddie Brock as he has for Peter Parker all these years. I do wish this issue devoted a little more time to exploring the Venom/Kraven dynamic directly, but it certainly succeeds in casting Kraven as a major threat in Venom's efforts to reestablish himself as New York's designated Lethal Protector.
