StartUp: Series Premiere Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

At first glance, StartUp -- debuting Tuesday on Crackle -- might seem like a tech-centric show along the lines of AMC's Halt and Catch Fire or HBO's Silicon Valley, but really, it's a slow-boil crime drama that at times effectively connects and collides, via Elmore Leonard-style webbing, four people from different worlds. It's not likely to change the TV, or streaming, landscape, but this pilot episode plays well enough and introduces us to the four key players in a manner that might hook you.

Out of the main cast, it's Martin Freeman's menacing, driven FBI Agent Rask that will either sell you on the story or send you running. Rask is a very different type of character than we're used to seeing Freeman play. He's fussy, sure, but he's also a shark - and he's the most intimidating presence in this Miami-set thriller. Which is saying a lot considering there's another character who, at one point, takes a blowtorch to a man's crotch.
