Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
It was almost exactly a year ago that Arrow inducted Matt Ryan’s John Constantine into this superhero universe. Maybe it’s becoming a tradition to use each season’s fifth episode to introduce a DC character made famous by another TV series. In the case of “Human Target,” the titular hero for hire made his way to Star City to help Ollie gain the upper hand against Tobias Church. It’s to this episode’s credit that Christopher Chance’s debut was probably its least remarkable quality.
It was fun seeing Christopher Chance return to television (this time played by Jessica Jones’ Wil Traval). The character starred in two short-lived TV series (one on ABC in 1992 on the other on Fox in 2010), but never quite seemed to find his audience. Maybe he’s just one of those heroes etter suited for small guest roles like this. Traval was fine in what turned out to be a fairly small role (not counting those scenes where Chance was technically disguised as other characters), but the script didn’t give him much to work with. That was probably for the best. It’s debatable whether the writers actually needed Chance as a catalyst for their staged assassination plot, and forcing Chance to play an even bigger role in the conflict probably would have distracted from the other character arcs at play this week.
