Warning: Full spoilers for Always Sunny: Season 12 below.
In Season 12, the Always Sunny gang made some big strides on the maturity front. Along with their later-season penchant for playfully experimenting with the show's format -- i.e. a musical chapter, a Making a Murderer spoof, an episode centered around Cricket, etc -- a few of characters took a deep look inside themselves and made some overdue changes.
In the season's best at bat, "Hero or Hate Crime?," Mac decided to come out to his friends, putting an end to the long-running innuendos and jokes about everyone around him assuming/already knowing he was gay. Though it may not have been a big moment for the rest of the Gang (again, they already knew, and didn't care), it was a meaningful and touching moment for Mac - and for us as viewers. The show could now extend up and out of the singularity of the Mac gag, freeing itself to explore other things.
