Sword Art Online makes its way to the big screen with SAO The Movie: Ordinal Scale, a film that’s sure to please fans of the franchise with a new story that feels like a gift for longtime fans because of interesting connections to the series’ past. It won’t likely convert those who aren’t already invested in the massively popular “trapped-in-a-game” anime series nor does it serve as an introduction it, but those who’ve been with SAO from the beginning will find Ordinal Scale delivers a compelling story, bolstered by a fascinating premise that feels both fresh and familiar.
Instead of retelling protagonists Kirito and Asuna’s early adventures, Reki Kawahara, the author of the light novel series on which the Sword Art Online anime is based, has crafted an entirely original story that takes place after the show’s second season. Before Ordinal Scale begins its new tale, its opening provides a concise recap of prior events. As someone who’s seen the first two seasons of the anime, I found this to be a nice refresher. That said, I don’t think this brief recap will be substantial enough to prevent viewers who aren’t already familiar with SAO from feeling a bit lost amongst the cast of returning characters and callbacks to prior events.
