Tonight’s Flash was essentially a sequel to “The Runaway Dinosaur,” with Barry returning to the Speed Force for a mission all about self-discovery and coming to terms with the tragedies in his life. As middling as Season 3 has been at times, it’s certainly not a bad idea to use one of Season 2’s best episodes as a launching pad. But while this episode delivered some memorable drama and a lot of welcome guest appearances along the way, it ultimately failed to stick the landing.
The general tone of the show was every bit as grim as it was leading into Barry’s first jaunt into the Speed Force, with the whole gang mourning the loss of Wally and coming to terms with the idea that they may very well lose Barry next. There was a brief attempt to inject some levity into the mix as Wells explained the differences between the Earth-1 and earth-19 versions of Peanuts (his version sounds awful, by the way), but otherwise the tone was pretty glum this week. As it should be at this point in the season.
