The Doctor Strange/Punisher dynamic works so well because it's hard to picture two more severely mismatched Marvel characters. One protects the mundane world from all manner of supernatural threats, and the other spends all day gunning down criminals. It's a dynamic that was used to great effect in the otherwise forgettable Original Sin, and now it forms the basis of Marvel's latest digital-first Infinite Comics series. Like many Infinite Comics, Magic Bullets is an amusing but largely unambitious addition to the Marvel library.
Magic Bullets teams writer John Barber with storyboard artist Jason Muhr and artist Andrea Broccardo. This first issue (which collects the first two digital chapters) introduces a very straightforward conflict, with Frank uncovering a magical relic during a mission and turning to Strange for assistance. The emphasis is more on their Odd Couple dynamic than plot, but that works well enough. Frank's utter disinterest in anything and everything to do with magic is amusing. At the same time, the story plays nicely with Strange's current status quo and the diminished nature of magic in the Marvel Universe. What might have once been a quick errand for Strange now becomes a life-or-death struggle.
