Warning: this review contains spoilers for The Clone Conspiracy #3!
Clone Conspiracy readers haven't necessarily needed to be following Amazing Spider-Man to appreciate this latest Spider-Man event, but that may change with the release of Amazing Spider-Man #22. This issue offers some much-needed background and context to the surprise twist in The Clone Conspiracy #3. Marvel might as well have labeled this one "The Clone Conspiracy #3.5."
This issue picks up exactly where The Clone Conspiracy #3 left off, with a flabbergasted Peter coming to grips with the revelation that Ben Reilly has been masquerading as the Jackal. What follows is a lengthy recap of what Ben has been up to since his apparent death at the end of the Clone Saga. Writers Dan Slott and Christos gage use this issue to answer various practical questions like "How did Ben survive turning into a puddle of goo?" and "Why didn't he resurface before now?"
