Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of Justice League Action, which will premiere on Cartoon Network on Friday, December 16 at 6pm EST.
At this point, many DC fans probably suffer an involuntary eye twitch whenever they hear the phrase "Cartoon Network." The station has played host to some of the finest DC-based animated series ever crafted, including Young Justice, Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Beware the Batman. And yet, all three of those shows were quietly and unceremoniously canceled by a network more concerned with ratings and toy sales than critical acclaim. Cartoon Network's newest DC project, Justice League Action, speaks to that more kid-friendly approach to superhero storytelling. It's light, enjoyable and sure to sell a boatload of action figures. But those who demand deeper stories and character drama in their superhero cartoons should probably look elsewhere.
