Tonight’s Supergirl couldn’t have been more timely if it were planned that way. Mere hours after the Trump administration rolled out its revised immigration ban, Supergirl delivered an episode all about the evils of xenophobia and persecuting immigrants. The result was a very topical installment, but more importantly, a very well executed one.
“Exodus” certainly left a strong impression with its opening scene, as it transitioned from a goofy musical sequence to a chilling look at a harmless, law-abiding family of alien immigrants being forcibly detained for no other reason than that they’re aliens. Maybe it’s not the most subtle commentary on the state of affairs in the Western world, but it doesn’t have to be. Here, the show is hitting on the same element that makes the X-Men franchise so enduringly popular and resonant. Like mutants, these aliens are a clear allegory for any number of oppressed minorities. So much of this show is pure, outlandish science fiction - superhumans, murderous cyborgs, fifth dimensional trickster imps - but this is one conflict where Supergirl manages to hit very close to home. And in the process, the show echoes the "hero of the common man" element that made Superman such a powerful character during his early, Golden Age adventures.
