Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Pretty much every Arrow fan will agree that the show was at its best in its first two seasons. That said, sometimes I wonder if we DC fans simply have higher standards in this post-Flash climate. When Arrow first premiered, there was little to compare it to other than Smallville. But now Arrow has spawned an entire television universe, and it routinely struggles to keep pace with the likes of Flash and Supergirl. The gulf only seems to be widening as Arrow’s fifth season gets underway.
The show has its heart in the right place, at least. There’s a concerted effort to rein in the show’s storylines and return to a darker, more grounded and more vigilante-focused approach. Ollie is back to battling gangsters, and a new archer villain is making the rounds in Star City. But as I discussed in last week’s season premiere review, the question of how grounded Arrow is is superficial. The new season isn’t doing enough to address the show’s more fundamental storytelling mistakes.
