Mascots will be streaming on Netflix from October 13.
Writer-director Christopher Guest has carved a very specific niche for himself in film over the last two decades. Inspired by the success he had as an actor/improviser in Spinal Tap, Guest crafted a series of superb spoof documentaries that examined some of society’s strangest interests and obsessions.
Waiting for Guffman tackled the am-dram scene in a small Missouri town, Best in Show revolved around a prestigious dog show, and A Mighty Wind focussed on folk bands reuniting for a one-off performance. His latest effort – Mascots – confronts a similarly specific subject in the shape of the men and women who don novelty costumes to cheer on sports teams, big and small. And while it isn’t vintage Chris Guest – lacking the bite of some of those previous efforts – the film is nevertheless filled with laughs and a healthy dose of heart.
