Film festival hype is a tricky thing, because in some ways it can greatly benefit the independent titles that otherwise might not have seen the light of day without the rapturous critical-acclaim they receive from early Sundance or Toronto International Film Festival audiences. For some other films though, they crumble under the weight of that acclaim, not quite managing to sustain that same appeal months later when they’re finally released theatrically, and more than just excited film fans and critics have a chance to really look at them.
No film this year has received quite as much hype from its early festival screenings than Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, which also marks the latest film from A24, the continually impressive and challenging film studio whose presence in the entertainment industry and awards circuit grows more and more with each passing year. They’ve made it their prerogative as a studio to release films unlike any other major distributor out there right now, and with Moonlight they’ve not only given us one of their most unique films to date, but also one of their most impressive.
