It took a bit longer than expected, but the finale to Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca's Darth Vader saga is here. Darth Vader #25 caps off that saga on a fitting note. This issue showcases many of the book's core storytelling strengths even as it ties up all remaining loose ends from the past two years.
More than any other Star Wars comic, Darth Vader recognizes the value of subtlety and not telling where showing will suffice. At times the book can become a little too spartan for its own good (issue #24's exploration of Vader's inner psyche being one example), but here the "less is more" philosophy pays off handsomely. Vader goes through quite a gauntlet in this issue, confronting his enemy, Cylo, reuniting with Dr. Aphra and being forced to make a full account of his actions before the Emperor. In most cases, some sort of narration would be in order to shed light on the protagonist's struggle and how they react, But Vader is a character who works best when his thoughts and feelings are kept buried underneath that monolithic armor. Gillen and Larroca leave readers to wonder just how much attachment Vader feels to Aphra or whether he feels any satisfaction in finally ridding the galaxy of a pesky nemesis.
