Spider-Man: The Clone Conspiracy #1 Review

The Clone Conspiracy is the third major Spider-Man crossover Dan Slott has spearheaded during his long tenure on the franchise. However, this crossover lacks the clear, simple hook that made Spider-Island and Spider-Verse so approachable. Not to mention all the baggage that comes with the word "clone." This mini-series really needed a strong, tightly paced debut issue to start it off on the right foot, but The Clone Conspiracy #1 doesn't quite rise to the challenge.

This issue picks up shortly after the events of Amazing Spider-Man #19, with Peter and his family mourning the death of J. Jonah Jameson, Sr. and Peter blaming himself for not giving New U the go-ahead to save his uncle. Emotionally, this conflict starts off on strong footing. Peter is back to blaming himself for a death he feels he could have prevented. In the process, Slott is tying the story back to one of the core themes of his run - the idea that Peter is obsessed with saving everyone he can, no matter how unrealistic that goal might be. In many ways, The Clone Conspiracy is a much more personal, intimate story than the wacky team-up that was Spider-Verse.
