Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of "Treehouse of Horror XXVII," which will premiere on FOX on Sunday, October 16 at 8pm EST.
It's mid-October now, which means it's time for another of The Simpsons' annual "Treehouse of Horror" anthology episodes. This year's special has an extra selling point, though, as it also happens to mark the show's 600th episode. But as impressive as that milestone is, it's kind of a shame a better episode wasn't chosen to mark the occasion.
While the opening and closing segments acknowledge the #600 milestone, in all other respects this episode plays out like any other "Treehouse of Horror" installment. That means three segments that pay lip service to the Halloween theme, spoof various popular movies and feature far more death and violence than you'll find on an average episode of the show. Outside of the opening, there's very little about this episode that actually screams "Halloween." But that's been the general trend in recent years, so if disappointing, the lack of Halloween elements is hardly surprising at this point.
