The Flash: "Magenta" Review

With the third season now a few weeks old, The Flash seems to be settling into its new status quo. This year, instead of new villains being spawned by the particle accelerator accident or Zoom opening up wormholes to Earth-2, Dr. Alchemy is the catalyst for most of Team Flash’s problems. The fallout of Flashpoint isn’t quite as dramatic as we were led to believe (at least not yet), but there’s something to be said for seeing the show get back to basics again.

“Magenta” added the titular villain to Flash’s ever-growing lineup of villains (played by Fargo’s Joey King). She was embellished quite a bit compared to the source material, but I think the changes were for the best. As enjoyable as these various CW DC shows are, they constantly frustrate me in that the writers rarely show the same level of care and attention to the villains as they do the heroes. Outside of the big guns like Reverse-Flash, Gorilla Grodd and Zoom, it’s rare to see villains with real depth and pathos. But Magneta had pathos to spare, as she was less a real villain and more a confused, battered teenager led astray by a creepy dude in a bad Halloween costume.
