Death of X #1 Review

A lot changed for the X-Men in the aftermath of Secret Wars. Suddenly, mutants became an endangered species again, and the Inhumans and their roving Terrigen mist cloud were revealed as the culprits. And if the X-Men themselves are to be believed, Cyclops died in a futile war against this new, unexpected threat. The purpose of Death of X is to shed more light on that missing period and how the fortunes of the X-Men fell even as those of the Inhumans rose. The first issue serves as a solid beginning, though one that unfolds pretty much exactly as expected.

Uncanny Inhumans writer Charles Soule and Extraordinary X-Men writer join forces for this mini-series, making Death of X essentially a primer for their work on the upcoming Inhumans vs. X-Men. The two writers cleverly structure this first issue in a way to juxtapose the experiences of the two teams. As Crystal leads her team on another mission to retrieve newly emerging Inhumans, they encounter a public growing more tolerant and even supportive of the expanding Inhuman empire. The X-Men, by contrast, see their numbers dwindling and fear intensifying in the face of this new threat.
