A rotoscope animation retelling of a mass shooting, on the face of it, may sound rather incongruous – as though it is treating something deadly serious in a lighthearted fashion. In actuality, what director Keith Maitland has done with the documentary Tower, which does also include live-action footage, not only maintains the seriousness of the incident but is completely engrossing as well.
Maitland's film, which counts Luke Wilson and Meredith Vieira amongst its executive producers, is the story of the shootings in Austin at the University of Texas campus on August 1, 1966. It reconstructs the events via first-hand accounts, utilized the aforementioned rotoscope technique to recreate many of the moments. Tower even goes so far as to animate portions of the interviews themselves.
