It's funny to note that Cage! and Jessica Jones are among the first of the new Marvel NOW books to see the light of day, and they could scarcely be more different from one another. Jessica Jones explores the dark underbelly of the Marvel Universe and offers a grim view of the title character and her relationship with her husband, Luke Cage. Whereas Cage! is a bombastic, lighthearted throwback to Luke's early superhero days. This is a comic that knows its niche and covers it well.
First announced way back in 2007, Cage! is Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky's love letter to the early Luke Cage comics. That means Luke is back in the tiara and yellow shirt, patrolling the streets of New York and spouting one-liners. It's pretty much impossible not to imagine a funky '70 soundtrack playing in the background as you read through these pages. Tartakovsky keeps tongue planted firmly in cheek throughout this issue. There's a very self aware quality to it all which only further enhances the humor and fun level.
