The comics industry has been working overtime lately to deliver the big, improbable crossovers fans have been dreaming about for years. Just recently, we've seen Star Trek/Green Lantern, Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes and Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And surprisingly enough, all three of those books were terrific reads beyond the simply novelty factor. Sadly, despite featuring the same artist from Batman/TMNT, He-Man/Thundercats #1 isn't quite able to recapture that same magic.
Simply put, it never pays to take either of these franchises too seriously. Both the He-Man and Thundercats universes are inherently silly and outlandish, and that's part of their charm. One need only look at Wildstorm's handling of the Thundercats comics in the early 2000's (the phrase "implied rape" should never be anywhere near this franchise) to see the dangers in going the grim and gritty adult route with these characters. DC avoided that problem with their rebooted He-Man comics mainly by employing writers like Keith Giffen and Dan Abnett, who are skilled at bringing levity into their work regardless of the subject matter.
